Mùa đông ở Huế thật là khó chịu. Ở miền Bắc, trời lạnh nhứng khô ráo, cái lạnh làm cho người khỏe mạnh và thôi thúc ta hoạt động. Còn ở Huế thì trái lại, trời mưa tầm tả hết ngày này sang ngày khác, liên miên tưởng như không bao giờ dứt.	The winter is Hue is indeed very disagreeable. In North Vietnam, the weather is cold but dry a cold which invigorates and impels us to be active. In Hue, on the contrary, it rains incessantly, day after day, as if it would nevery stop.

Mọi vật đều ẩm ướt, không khí nặng nề bao trùm khắp nơi làm cho ta tưởng như sống trong cảnh lao tù, thiếu ánh sang, thiếu tiếng chim hót, người ta phải sống trong khung cảnh chật hẹp, mọi hoạt động đều tê liệt.	Everything is humid, a heavy atmosphere covers all, and one has the feeling of living in a prison, lach of light, lack of bird-songs, one has to live in a confined space where all operations are immobile
