Every
year, at the end of autumn, when leaves fall multitudinously on the roads and
there are white-silver clouds in the sky, my heart is seared with perplexed
memories of the first school day.

Tôi
quên thế nào được những cảm giác trong sang ấy nảy nở trong lòng tôi chưa một
lần nào ghi trên giấy vì hồi đó tôi không biết ghi và ngày nay tôi không nhớ
hết. Nhưng mỗi lần thấy mấy em nhỏ rụt rè nép dưới nón mẹ lần đầu tiên đi đến
trường, lòng tôi lại tưng bừng rộn rã.

How
can I forget those distinct feelings which grew in my heart like fresh flowers
blooming (smiling) in the clear blue sky. I have never noted those ideas
because I couldn’t write then, and now, I can’t remember them all. But whenever
I see little children timidly hiding themselves under their mothers’ conical
hats to go to school for the first time, my heart is filled with joys and
excitement.

mai hôm ấy, một buổi mai đầy sường thu và gió lạnh. Me tôi âu yếm nắm lấy tay
tôi dẫn đi trên con đường làng dài và hẹp. Con đường này tôi đã quen đi lại
nhiều lần nhưng lần này tôi tự nhiên thấy lạ. Cảnh vật chung quanh đề thay đổi
vì chính lòng tôi đang có có sự thay đổi lớn: hôm nay tôi đi học.

That
morning, a morning full of autumn mist and cold wind. My mother tenderly took
my hand and led me on the long and narrow village road. I used to walk on the
road many times, but this time I suddenly realized something strange.
Everything around seemed to have changed because there was a great change right
in my heart: I was going to school.
