Hà Nội có một phong cảnh tuyệt đẹp là hồ Hoàn Kiếm, hình bầu dục, bề rộng tới 500 thước, quanh bờ cây cối um tum, cỏ xanh tốt, thực là một cảnh tiên giữa nơi náo nhiệt.
Ha Noi has a very beautiful landscape, that is Hoan Kiem lake, it is oval, about 500 metres wide, the vegetation is luxuriant along the edge, and the grass green. It is a fairy-land amid the bustle of city indeed.
Hồ có hai đảo nhỏ: một cái giữa hồ, có xây một cái tháp, một cái có cầu Thê Húc, có đền Ngọc Sơn.
The lake has two islets: one in the middle with a tower built on it, and the other with The Huc bridge and Ngoc Son temple.
Sử chép rằng: Vua Lê Thái Tổ khi còn hàn vi làm nghề đánh cá. Một hôm, cất vó được thanh bảo kiếm, sau khi Ngài đã dẹp yên quân Minh, lên ngôi Thiên tử, ngự thuyền chơi hồ, bỗng có con rùa to nổi lên, vua lấy gươm ra chỉ, thì rùa ngậm gươm lặn mất, vì thế mà thành tên hồ Hoàn Kiếm.
Historians recorded: Emperor Le Thai To, in his poverty, was fisherman. One day, lifting up/pulling his fishing net our of the water, he found a precious/sacred sword. After crushing the Ming invaders, he ascended the throne. Once when taking a trip on the lake, the Emperor suddenly saw a large tortoise emerging from the water, he pointed to the creature with his sword and the tortoise immediately grasped it and disappeared, that is the reason why the lake got its name: “The Lake of the Restored Sword.”
